At the time of Indain Independence in 1947, as per the terms of the Britain–India–Nepal Tripartite Agreement, six Gorkha regiments, formerly part of the British Indian Army, became part of the Indian Army and have served ever since. The troops are mainly from ethnic Gurkha communities of Nepal.

The Army School Varanasi, was started on 03 April, 2001. The school took over the assets of the Gorkha Primary School, 39 GTC, Varanasi Cantt.

Army Pre Primary School, 39GTC, Varanasi Cantt was established on 1 Apr 2001 with the objective to impart quality education to the children of serving as well as retired defence personnel. Ever since its inception, APPS Varanasi has been instrumental in laying down a sound foundation of early childhood education. Under the aegis of Army Welfare Education Society, the school has been providing an integrated education system taking into account various developmental domains and innovative pedagogies thereby building requisite qualities in a child of a strong character, independent learner and dynamic personality. The curriculum of the school is based on the government’s Early Childhood Care Education program and the New Education Policy 2020 which aim at holistic development of the child.
